NCKU Delegation Visits Top Universities and Institutions in Thailand, Enhancing Academic Ties between Taiwan and Thailand

In July 2023, a delegation led by Prof Chyan-Deng Jan, the dean of the College of Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), and Prof Fon-Chin Su, the lead of the NSTC Taiwan-Thailand project, embarked on a visit to the top universities and institutions in Thailand to strengthen academic research collaboration and exchange between the two countries. During this trip, the delegation visited various institutions, including the Bangkok Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Bangkok Metropolitan, Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology, and Chiang Mai University. The delegation had discussions on bilateral international research collaboration projects, covering topics such as faculty and student exchanges, student mobility, and dual degree programs and had tours of key laboratories. The visit also aimed to promote the distinctive features, the outstanding quality of teaching, research, and development capabilities of the NCKU.

During this visit, the NCKU delegation met with the Bangkok Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Bangkok Metropolitan. The purpose was to gain a deeper understanding of the work and mission of firefighting and rescue services. The discussion was through various topics related to disaster prevention, relief efforts, and post-disaster recovery, aiming to enhance mutual understanding between the two countries in disaster management systems and explore potential areas for collaboration, with a particular emphasis on disaster prevention personnel training and academic research exchange.

During visiting Mahidol University (MU), the NCKU delegation not only toured the Faculty of Engineering to gain insight into the latest research in its various laboratories but also held meetings with representatives of MU. At the Faculty of Engineering, the NCKU delegation engaged in further discussions to explore possibilities for deeper collaboration, aiming to advance research in their respective fields jointly.

The discussion at the NCKU Thailand Overseas hub, located in MU, focused on organizing future academic events and talent development initiatives and exploring avenues to strengthen academic exchanges that will further enhance academic cooperation and collaboration in science and technology between the two institutions.

During the meeting with the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, the NCKU delegation discussed potential future collaborations between their respective engineering schools. The focus of the discussions was to promote cooperation and exchange in the engineering field, thereby enhancing the collaborative relationship between the two universities.

The NCKU delegation visited the Biomedical Engineering and Civil Engineering laboratories at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) and engaged in in-depth discussions with representatives from the university. The NCKU delegation also visited CMKL University, a collaborative initiative between Carnegie Mellon University and KMITL, offering a dual-degree graduate program in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Engineering (AiCE). CMKL University cultivates top research talents through its global partnership with local expertise, promoting technology diffusion and fostering new research and innovation.

During this visit, the NCKU delegation and KMITL signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for student exchange programs, further enhancing academic exchanges between the two universities.

The NCKU delegation had a meeting with the President, Prof. Pongruk Sribanditmongkol, and the Vice President, Asst. Prof. Todsaporn Pichaiya, of Chiang Mai University. During the meeting, they delved into discussions regarding the contents of the collaborative Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the joint master's and doctoral degree program, as well as explored the directions for other academic cooperation projects beyond the Biomedical Engineering Department. Both parties expressed their commitment to working together, enhancing academic exchanges, and nurturing talent development between the two universities.

This visit to various universities and institutions in Thailand has opened up new opportunities for collaboration between NCKU and Thai universities, further strengthening friendship and academic exchanges between the two countries. NCKU will continue actively promoting international academic exchanges, cooperation and mutual progress with countries in the New Southbound Policy region.
